How to Solve an HP 1100 Printer Problem

The Hewlett-Packard LaserJet 1100 is a black-and-white laser printer that can print up to eight pages per minute on the fastest setting. The 1100 has a maximum output resolution of 600 dots per inch. The capacity of the paper input bin is up to 125 sheets of regular paper. Diagnosing the cause of a problem when it occurs is the first step toward resolving the issue. Complete all of the troubleshooting steps to solve the problem after the cause of the issue has been established.

Instructions

Press and release the "Go" button on the printer control panel to print a self-test page; this test verifies the printer is working correctly and that the toner is correctly installed.

Plug the data cable securely into the port on the computer if the printer is not responding to print commands (an unsecure connection will prevent the computer from successfully communicating with the printer).

Send a print job from any document- or-image-manipulation program to verify that the software connection from the computer to the printer is functioning correctly.

Pull paper directly out from the input tray if there is a paper jam. Pull outbound paper out from the output port if it is jammed there.

Replace the toner cartridge if documents are faded or streaked with horizontal lines. These print-quality problems indicate that the toner is almost empty in the HP 1100.

How to Troubleshoot HP Printer Slipping Problems

HP inkjet and laser printers may occasionally suffer from a problem known as "slipping" or "ghosting," which causes images to be printed either off center or multiple times on the same page, and can also cause a grinding noise. Although the problem may be caused by a mechanical defect that must be repaired, there are several instances in which you can troubleshoot the issue and resolve it at home.

Instructions

Turn on your computer and access the HP printing software that you installed when you first set up the printer. Click on the "Tools" menu and then choose the "Options" or "Settings" tab. Click on the option to run a self-cleaning. Wait for the self-cleaning process to completely finish and then attempt to print you original document again and see if you are still experience a slipping problem.

Check the manual that came with your HP printer to see if it has a recalibration process. Follow the steps described in the manual or instead try the standard re-calibration process if you don't have your manual. Start the standard re-calibration by pressing and holding the "Cancel," "OK," "Black" and "Color" buttons on the top of the printer for two seconds and then pressing the power button. Press the power button to turn it back on, then turn it off and then back on again. Wait for the printer to go through its calibration process and then attempt to print again.

Open the top of the HP printer and remove and re-insert the ink cartridges if it is an inkjet printer, or the laser toner and fuser box if it is a laser printer. Make sure they are properly installed and are not wiggling in their carriages. Close the top and attempt to print again.

Replace the ink cartridges or laser toner and fuser box entirely in case they are defective, and attempt to print again.

Go to the official HP support website and type in the model of printer you have (see Resources below). Click on the "downloads" link and then click on "Drivers." Download and install the latest version of the driver for your printer and then attempt to print again.
